Can taking vitamin D supplements or spending more time in the sun help prevent Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia?

This question appeared on the Mayo Clinic’s website (www.mayoclinic.org) and the response by David S. Knopman, M.D. pointed to interesting preliminary research suggesting that people with very low levels of vitamin D in their blood are more likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. Dr. Knopman stressed that this association was observational and that more research was needed.
