How To Get 4-Year-Old To Sleep Alone?

  1. Give them a bedtime routine.
  2. Make sure their bedroom is comfortable and inviting.
  3. Start with short periods of alone time and work your way up.
  4. Be patient and consistent with your approach.

With a little patience and persistence, you can get your four-year-old to sleep alone. Just be sure to be supportive and understanding along the way.

It can be difficult to get your four-year-old to sleep alone. Here are a few tips to help you make the transition:

1. Talk to your child about why it's important to sleep in their own bed. Explain that it's a part of growing up and that everyone sleeps alone when they're a grown-up. Reassure them that you'll still be there for them if they need you.

2. Start by having your child sleep in their own bed for naps. This will help them get used to the idea of sleeping alone. Once they're comfortable with naps, start having them sleep in their own bed at night.

3. Help them get into a bedtime routine. A few weeks before you start having them sleep alone, start putting them to bed a few minutes earlier each night. This will help them get used to going to bed at a set time. Make sure the room is dark and quiet so they can relax and fall asleep.

4. Be patient and consistent. It might take a few nights for your child to get used to sleeping alone. Stick with it and don't give up!

You've been warned. If you're reading this, it means your child has sleep regression and is fighting you on sleeping in their own bed. Maybe they've always slept in your bed and you want them to transition to their own room. Maybe they use to sleep in their own room but have now started climbing into your bed in the middle of the night. Regardless of how it started, you're here because you want it to stop.

As a sleep coach, I'm sharing my top tips on how to get your 4-year-old to sleep alone so you can all get the sleep you need!

Tip #1: Set A Bedtime Routine

A bedtime routine should be short, sweet, and simple. It's a series of activities that signal to your child that it's time to wind down and go to sleep. A typical bedtime routine might look like this:

  • Teeth brushing
  • Pajamas on
  • Story time
  • Kisses and cuddles
  • Lights out

You can adjust the activities to fit your child's preferences and needs, but make sure it's something they enjoy and look forward to. The routine should be the same every night so they know what to expect.

Tip #2: Start Slow

If your child has never slept in their own bed before, or if they've been used to sleeping in your bed, start slow by moving them closer to their own bed. For example, if they normally sleep in your bed, move them to a mattress on the floor next to your bed. Then, over the course of a week or two, move the mattress further away from your bed until they're sleeping in their own bed.

Tip #3: Create A Comfortable Sleep Environment

Make sure their bedroom is a place where they feel safe and secure. If they have a favorite stuffed animal or blanket, let them sleep with it. You can also use a night light or music player to help them feel relaxed.

Tip #4: Be Consistent

Consistency is key when it comes to sleep training. Once you start the process, stick with it until your child is sleeping through the night in their own bed. There will be nights where it's a struggle and you'll want to give up, but don't! Stay strong and keep going. I promise it'll be worth it in the end.

Bonus Tip: Seek Professional Help

If you're struggling to get your child to sleep through the night, or if you're just not sure where to start, seek professional help. A certified sleep consultant can work with you one-on-one to create a customized sleep plan for your family. They can also provide support and guidance throughout the process so you don't have to do it alone.
